About the event

We will be having 3-minute presentations from Lani Freeborn (University of Amsterdam), Ana-Maria Teodora Andronic (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași), and Bochra Kouraichi (University of Szeged), with time for questions after each presentation. Note the event starts at 11am BST.

Lani Freeborn: Aptitude as a complex system

  • Abstract: In my PhD research I am conceptualising foreign language aptitude as a complex system. In contrast to the dominant view of aptitude as a relatively stable, cognitive construct, my research takes a much broader view of aptitude. Inspired by Snow's theory of aptitude complexes, I aim to analyse interactions between cognitive, affective, and conative individual differences and their relationship with language learning. To achieve this, I am conducting a large longitudinal study of L2 Dutch learners in the Netherlands.

Ana-Maria Teodora Andronic: Motivational persistence and migrant acculturation as predictors of life and work satisfaction

  • Abstract: TBC

Bochra Kouraichi: The use of motivational strategies in the EFL classroom: Teachers’ and students’ perspectives in Tunisian universities

  • Abstract: The current research seeks to investigate Tunisian university teachers’ use of motivational strategies and the extent to which their students find them effective. It also seeks to explore the relation between students’ self-perception as speakers of English and their teacher’s use of MotS. In addition, it will highlight any similarities or differences that emerge between teachers’ reported use of MotS and their actual motivational practice. The findings highlight a significant difference between teachers’ reported use of MotS and students’ perception of the MotS used.
