June 2023 Meeting

We are delighted to be hosting Dr Martin Lamb as our special guest, who will speak to us about his work, including his recent forays into unconscious motivation. There will be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A afterwards. You can find a brief description of Martin's talk below:

Abstract: In most educational contexts it is part of the teacher’s job to engender, sustain or enhance the learners’ academic motivation. The past two decades has seen a concerted effort by researchers in the L2 motivation field to identify effective motivational strategies which the teacher can use to do this. We know from recent work on learner motivation, though, that some aspects are unconscious, that is, learners are not fully aware of what is pushing them towards or away from their object of study. In this talk I will discuss the possibility that this is true in classrooms too, where teachers may not realize how their attitudes or beliefs are influencing their behaviour towards pupils and having a motivational impact.
