Veronika Derecskey: The effects of teacher disengagement in the EFL classroom in Hungary - A qualitative study

  • Abstract: This qualitative study focused on teacher disengagement, involving interviews with Hungarian secondary school teachers teaching English as a foreign language, exploring the causes of teacher disengagement, its effects on teaching and teachers' well-being. The data collection was followed by thematic analysis, emerging factors affecting different aspects of teacher engagement and ways teachers choose to cope with disengagement and burnout.

Sundus Alzouebi: Intercultural mentoring, motivation and identity in second language learning: A study of Arab ESL students' learning journeys in the UK

  • Abstract: This qualitative PhD study explores the challenges and successes experienced by migrant Arab ESL learners studying in the UK. The study analyses how such learners interpret and evaluate experiences of cultural diversity and how being interculturally mentored by a bilingual researcher supports them in developing their English, building relational connections and enhancing social integration. Reflective journals were written by the participants to log intercultural encounters they experienced over 12-24 months. Interviews were subsequently conducted where participants discussed the impact that being mentored had on their life and learning trajectories.

Anikó Berta: Motivation of high achievers learning a small language

  • Abstract: TBC
